Exploring Library Resources: Sample Searches

Go to the Libraries Homepage (click on LIBRARIES at top left).  We will explore various pages and databases within this site….many are “licensed” and available only to IU students and faculty.  While some may be open source through the general internet, the licensed database frequently include links to full text and related resources.

1. Find a Scholarly Article

Open Communication and Mass Media Complete (type this in the search box on Libraries’ website.) This database focuses on articles in the field of mass communication. IU pays for access to this copyrighted material, meaning you won't find these articles in google.

a) Search the following string: hate speech and broadcast*

How many articles did it identify?

b) Look through the titles for one with a pdf, which will bring up the full text of the article.

c) Look further down and notice that some of the articles are not pdf or html. They say "IULink," meaning that the article is not fulltext in this database BUT might be available in fulltext from another source. Click on it. If we don't have electronic access, it will refer you to IUCAT for our print holdings.

2. Find Case Law

Go to Lexis-Nexis Academic

a) To find a court case, you can use the Easy Search "Look up a Legal Case".  For your class you need to have read:  Fox TV v. Federal Communications Commission  -- cited: 2010 U.S. App. LEXIS 14293

b) Select US LEGAL, then Federal & State Cases. Try a general search for: television and indecency.  Notice that the Fox case comes up but also various other cases. Give one legal citation: _________________________

c) Find 491 U.S. 397.  Give title of the case: ___________________________________

3. Find Law Review Articles (from LexisNexis)

Law reviews are periodical articles for the legal profession. Their footnotes are almost more important than the article itself.

a) Find Law review articles about the Fox Television Stations case:

number found? ___________   What's the most recent: _______________

b) Find the article by Dr. McGregor on the topic of "public interest."

Use LexisNexis Academic; Legal Resources; Law Reviews, search McGregor in author field; public interest in title.  OR search Indiana University in the topic field with Mcgregor in the author field. You could also narrow to 2006.

In what journal was this article published? ___________________________________________________________

Go to Proquest Congressional

Notice you can search congressional publications, bills, laws, committe/member information, etc. (on the left)

4. 535 U.S. 234 discusses the Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996. Can you find that act?

Give PL Number or Statues Citation

a) To identify and find hearings and reports, search by keyword "child pornography"

b) Search Legislative History/Bills/Laws by the title of the act, i.e. Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996

Give PL Number or Statues Citation:

c) Find your Congressional representative(s). Search members. Name a senator or congressman from your district

Optional searches as time permits

Find a book:

Go to IUCAT.

a) Do a simple keyword search on Freedom of Speech. How many hits did you get?

b) Look at the book by Charles C. Haynes.

c) Notice there is a url to the table of contents so you can evaluate whether this book is what you need

d) Scroll down until you see the Library and call number. In what library does this book shelve? What is the call number?

e) Look at the blue bookmark. On what floor of the Research Collections would the KFs shelve?

Before leaving IUCAT:

What is My Account?   _______________________________________

What is Request Delivery? ________________________________________________

Find Federal primary documents (constitution, agency documents, presidential speeches, etc.)

The one-stop shopping location for federal information is www.usa.gov, the portal to U.S. Federal Government agency sites.

As an optional challenge question, find the official web site of the Federal Trade Commission

THOMAS is available to all citizens.  Proquest Congressional is for IU students and faculty.

Search these to determine the number of bills introduced thus far in the 111th Congress concerning "desecration of the flag".   For all legislation, you can find hearings, testimony, the code.
