Indiana University Bloomington is soliciting applications and nominations for the position of Dean of University Libraries, a senior administrative appointment who will provide leadership for one of the leading academic research library systems in North America. The IU Libraries system consists of eighteen libraries or units on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other campuses across the state. The Bloomington campus collections include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and sound recordings in over 900 languages. The materials support every academic discipline on campus, with an emphasis in the humanities and social sciences.
Position Description and Major Responsibilities
The Dean of University Libraries provides administrative leadership for a system of libraries on eight campuses and is responsible for the operational management of the libraries on the Bloomington campus. As chief executive officer of the Indiana University (IU) libraries, the Dean reports to the Indiana University Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President and serves on the appropriate academic, technology and administrative councils. On the Bloomington campus, he/she provides strategic planning and policy direction in the areas of collection development, public and technical services, facilities planning, and personnel policies and is responsible for the system-wide coordination with the library directors at all IU campuses. The Dean is responsible for the management of the Bloomington libraries’ fiscal resources and system-wide automation project budget and actively participates in development and grants activities. The Dean plays a university-wide leadership role in the development and implementation of digital library capabilities. The Dean represents the libraries within the university and throughout the state and the nation.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for the position require significant experience in administrative leadership. It is preferred the candidates have a minimum of 8-10 years of broad-based library experience with at least 5-7 years in a supervisory or management role with academic libraries. Specifically, the Dean of University Libraries must demonstrate inspired direction and leadership toward the achievement of the University Libraries' mission and goals; demonstrate a strong commitment to the support of teaching and research; and have comprehensive knowledge and a clear understanding of the evolving role of the academic research library in scholarly communication. The successful candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of the role of information technology in academic research libraries; have the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and represent the university with external parties in a professional and ethical manner; demonstrate commitment to diversity; and have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
