- 1. "What are industry codes, like SIC and NAICS?"
- SIC and NAICS are classification systems, developed by the U.S. government to categorize businesses by the primary activity in which they are engaged. NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) is the current coding system, SIC (Standard Industrial Classification), its predecessor. To find government data then, say from the Economic Census of 2002, one would first look up the desired NAICS code, and use that code to search for data. Many of the databases we subscribe to, like Mergent or Dun & Bradstreet or Amadeus allow searches by these classification codes.

- You can generate a list based on industry criteria (like NAICS or SIC codes) in various databases, see here. Or, Industry Surveys in S&P Netadvantage - IUB - IUPUI - include a nice comparative company analysis towards the end of each report. Also, pulling up a company in one of our company directories will generally include a list of that company's competitors.

- Factiva - IUB - IUPUI - offers nice comparison reports. Click on "Companies/Markets", then "Company". After locating your company snapshot select "Reports" from the left. Choose either a custom report or a ratio comparison report. Mergent Online - IUB - IUPUI - also has comparison reports. From the company screen choose the "Create Reports" tab and then the subheading "Comparison Reports". Other pertinent information can be found in S&P Netadvantage - IUB - IUPUI - Industry Surveys, located under the "Industry" tab.
