TIPS:
Readers Guide Retrospective 1890-1982:
- Try to track down the fulltext of a few articles; for example, if you click the IU Link button below R.L. Wertman’s “Simmy Works for Me Now,” you should be able to click on the Article link under Links to content and read the PDF Full Text on EBSCO's Academic Search Premier.
- If IU Link does not take you straight to the fulltext, try clicking on Check for availability in IUCAT to see if it is available in print; for example, if you are looking for Robert Shaplen's "Reporter at Large" in IU Link, it will not be available in electronic fulltext. But if you click Check for availability in IUCAT, the third listing shows IU to have the periodical from 1936-2008 in the bound volumes. Feel free to Ask a librarian for further assistance.
Declassified Documents Reference System (DDRS):
- Having searched for UN documents on the issue of biological weapons in the Korean War, DDRS might be an excellent source for the official (though formerly classified) U.S. response. Try a search in DDRS similar to the one you did in Access UN.
- You might notice that searching for "korean war" and "biological weapons" did not come up with any results. Some databases (and the organizations cataloged) use different language. Try searching for "biological warfare" or just 'biological' and see the difference. If you need additional help, try the Search Tips link at the top.
Proquest Congressional
It is rare that a social issue emerges in the United States without being discussed in Congress, even if a bill or law is not passed. Try searching for Congressional Reports or Hearings in Proquest Congressional. For example, if you were interested in issues pertaining to Japanese immigration in the decade after World War II, you might try the following:
- Click on the Advanced Search tab at the top.
- Type 'immigration' in the first search box.
- Type 'japan!' in the second box (the exclamation mark allows the search to look for any words starting with Japan, such as Japanese).
- Uncheck all the boxes, leaving only 'CRS Reports' and 'Hearings'.
- Change the date: Date is between...' (in the first drop-down menu) Aug. 15, 1945 to Aug. 15, 1955.
- To expand or limit your search, you can add search terms, change your dates, or include other congressional publications.
