Overview of the Social Work Collection

OVERVIEW/HISTORY OF THE COLLECTION

The Social Work Collection supports the teaching and research of the faculty, adjunct faculty, and undergraduate students of the School of Social Work. In response to the expansion of the IU-Bloomington Social Work program, a library materials budget was started in 2003-04.

STRENGTHS OF THE COLLECTION

The Social Work Collection covers all areas of Social Work, with particular strengths in child welfare, poverty, policy analysis, program evaluation, community development, and faith-based welfare. Primary emphasis is on United States materials, but important works covering the rest of the world, especially Britain and Europe, are collected selectively.

SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS

• An assessment of the Social Work Collection performed using Building the Undergraduate Social Work Library: An Annotated Bibliography (Council on Social Work Education, 1993) revealed that the IU Libraries own 96% of the core titles in this field.

• Electronic full-text articles are available in many core journals including: Child & Adolescent Social Work Journal, Child Welfare, Child Abuse & Neglect, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, International Social Work, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Aging Studies, Journal of Black Studies, Journal of Family Psychology, Journal of Social Policy, Psychological Bulletin, Social Policy, Social Service Review, and Social Work Research.

LOCATION OF THE SOCIAL WORK COLLECTION

The majority of the collection is located between the seventh floor of the Indiana University Bloomington Wells Library (HV in the Library of Congress call number system), the Information Commons/Undergraduate Services Core Collection, and Information Commons/Undergraduate Reference Collection. In addition, many pertinent materials will also be found in the HPER Library. Electronic resources can be accessed from the Libraries’ Web pages, www.libraries.iub.edu.
