Scanning Library Materials

Scanning standard 8 1/2" x 11" pages is free in the IU Bloomington Libraries.  Units in the Herman B Wells Library (Reference Reading Room on the first floor of the East Tower, East Tower 2,  Information Commons) and all branch libraries have flatbed scanners that are available to all patrons.  Scanned documents can be loaded onto a thumb/flash drive or sent to an e-mail, Oncourse or Box account.

The Information Commons in the West Tower of the Herman B Wells Library provides access to seven different scanners.  These scanners are available to IU Bloomington students, faculty and staff with a University network ID.  Each scanner has instructions for use posted with it.

Printing of scanned results uses the standard printing procedures and allocations.

Special scanning equipment and services are available as well:

Fine Arts Library

The Fine Arts Library has a large 11x17 inch, 48 bit color, scanner that is perfect for generating high resolution scans.

Fragile Materials
Fragile, tightly bound, or oversized materials require special handling.  East Tower 2 staff (located on the second floor of the Research Collections in the Herman B Wells Library) will scan these materials using a special cradle copier.  Scans must be done by staff, and can be ordered at the East Tower 2 Circulation Desk.  The scanner can copy materials up to 17" x 23" (single fold newspaper size) without damaging the original.  Scans can be converted to PDF or TIFF files.

Users may provide their own CDs for scans, purchase a CD for $1.25, or have scans sent to an email address.

Electronic scans are made by the staff cost 15 cents per page.  Prints also cost 15 cents per page.

For more information on the cradle copier, please see the ET2 web site:

Microfilm and Microfiche
East Tower 2 has microform machines that can scan pages.  These scans can be printed, saved to a flash drive, and/or be e-mailed.  More information.
