Guide to Finding Folktales in the Library

1. To locate variants of the same tale:

First, find the Aarne-Thompson type number for your tale:
 a. Type Index
 b. Ashliman (especially if there is a variant in Grimm)
 c. MacDonald
 d. Look in the headnotes or index of tale types in a collection of tales (See References Part 2)

Second, use this number to lookup variants in other sources (listed in order of ease of use):
 a. Ashliman (especially if there is a variant in Grimm)
 b. MacDonald 1982 and 2003
 c. Look for a collection with an index of tale types (see references Part 2)
 d. Aarne-Thompson Type Index


General Folktale Collections:

Folktales of the World  
A series of folktale collections published by the University of Chicago Press.  Titles in the series include Folktales of Egypt, Folktales of Hungary, etc.  Find all of them in IUCAT by searching for the series title.
