Guidelines for Internships in Media Services
Media and Reserve Services
Herman B Wells Library
The IUB Bloomington Libraries Media Services Department is dedicated to support the teaching, learning, and cultural needs of Indiana University-Bloomington faculty, instructors, students, staff, and the Bloomington community by a) maintaining a high-quality collection of non-print media, b) providing prompt access to reliable information resources, and c) providing excellent user service and support.
The IU Bloomington Libraries Media Services offers internships for students interested in areas such as film studies, media literacy, and library science. All internships require a commitment of 8-10 hours per week staffing the circulation desk, re-shelving media materials, and fully participating in the provision of public services in M&RS of the Wells Library. These hours are paid. Interns must meet the same requirements of employment of other paid hourly staff. For more information about specific responsibilities of staffing the M&RS circulation desk see the contact information below.
In addition to the commitment above, all interns will complete a project that requires 4-5 hours a week. These hours are unpaid. Examples of appropriate projects include:
- Design and prepare a media literacy workshop for the IUB campus community
- Create index guides for research on a film genre, a subject, or a director
- Develop a pathfinder to Libraries and Internet media resources
- Develop outreach initiative to promote awareness of Media collections
- Develop an assessment and evaluation plan for Media collections
- Develop an interactive multi-model online training program for M&RS student hourly
The project should match the student’s intellectual and professional interests as well as the needs of Media Services. All projects must be approved by the Head of M&RS and will be defined in writing before the internship begins.
Course credit for internships is an option which requires faculty sponsorship within an academic department or school (with the exception of SLIS). SLIS students should contact Monique Threatt at mthreatt@indiana.edu.
