Helmuth Wolfes

Biography


       Born in Germany, Wolfes, began piano studies at age five.  Wolfes studied at the Universities of Berlin, Heidelberg, Halle, and Munich.  Wolfes worked as the music director of the Monte Carlo Opera and conductor of the Berlin State Opera.  In 1938 he came to United States as assistant conductor of the City Center Opera in New York. Wolfes also conducted on USO tours in Europe, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan and worked as the chorus director of the New Orleans Opera House. After 1953, Wolfes worked as the music director of Karamu House, Cleveland.
