Resource Guide for Mali
The current crisis in the Republic of Mali in West Africa has created a demand for information. In early 2012, Malian soldiers who were upset by the government's ineffective efforts to control Tuareg rebels in the north staged a coup d'etat. During the unrest, Tuareg rebels and Islamic militants seized control of northern Mali, and the latter instituted Islamic law in the north. In January 2013, the central Malian government in Bamako appealed to France for assistance, and French troops are currently engaged in joint Malian-French combat operations against the rebels.
