ARTstor Images


About


A digital image library of more than 1.4 million images and growing, with the ability to create personalized image groups, and annotate individual images and groups.


Content & Scope


Numerous big-name institutions and collections have contributed images to the ARTstor image library. For a list of these collections, click here. The images are of all media, and span prehistory to this year, including cultures worldwide.

Bridgeman Education


About

A digital image library of approximately one million images, mostly of an older, art historical scope. Bridgeman Education stems from Bridgeman Art Library, a major creator and distributor of slides for teaching collections, and the quality and content of image cataloging is reflected in their digital library, which enables content-driven browsing much more readily than the other collections listed here.

Numerous collections and artists are represented here, mostly of a historical rather than contemporary nature.

Europeana


About

Europeana is the main portal for digitized cultural heritage items across the European Union, with art, film, musical recordings, literature, and the like, representing works from over 2,200 cultural institutions. 



Content & Scope

It has over 2 million items from over 2,200 insitutions across thirty-four countries. Institutions include such big names as the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre. The content spans across history and comes from all over the globe. Here's a list of content providers.

Terms of Use


Europeana recently announced that they would open up licensing restrictions on the metadata accompanying the material, so that anyone can use the material for any purpose, be it scholarly, commercial or otherwise. However, the image rights are still held by the contributing institutions, so you need to check each institution's policy before proceeding to use the image for publishing.



Image Collection

About

A digital image library put together by EBSCO, it features the familiar interface married to content mostly drawn from news and events, and cultural history.



Content & Scope

Image Collection has more than half a million photographs from world history, cultural events, places, people, and maps. It features images from Getty Images and the Motion Picture and Television Archive, making it a valuable resource especially for film studies.

Unfortunately, Image Collection does not support Advanced Search, so you need to include Boolean operators within the Basic Search frame.

VADS: Visual Arts Data Service

About

A digital image library of more than 120,000 items from British cultural institutions, including the Bodleian, British History Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, 



Content & Scope

Numerous British institutions have contributed their images to this library, including collections dedicated to design, fashion, and fine and applied arts, from across the globe and all time periods. For a comprehensive list, click here.
