Data Management at IU
Data Management at Indiana University
On the heels of Empowering People: Indiana University’s Strategic Plan for Information Technology 2009, the Indiana University Libraries, in cooperation with UITS, created a two-pronged approach to tackling one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century: research data management. Equally important are IU’s robust cyberinfrastructure and data management expertise provided by staff at the Office of Research Administration, OVPR’s Proposal Development Services, and the IU Libraries.
Following is a guide to resources available on the IU Bloomington campus, and some key departments from other campuses who can assist their own researchers.
University-wide
- NSF Data Management Plan Boilerplate
IU-specific language to help you write a data management plan that conforms to general NSF requirements. - University Research Policies
Your "one stop shop" for documented policies related to research at Indiana University. Part of a larger site that documents all university policies. A good starting point. - DMPTool
This interactive website offers guidance and resources for writing your own Data Management Plans to the specifications of a variety of grant funding agencies. Among its chief advantages is the availability of boilerplate language for researchers who plan to use the IU cyberinfrastructure to manage their data. - UITS Research Technologies
A unit whose mission is to "develop, deliver, and support advanced technology solutions that enable new possibilities in research, scholarly endeavors, and creative activity at Indiana University and beyond." - UITS Scholarly Data Archive
A tape storage service available free of charge to all IU researchers. Intended to support private, secure long-term and big data storage. HIPAA-aligned. - IUScholarWorks Repository
An Open Access repository that "enables IU scholars and academic units to make their scholarly materials accessible to the world, at a stable URL, and with the assurance they will be maintained over the long term." - IU HIPAA Privacy & Security Compliance Plan (PDF)
"The goal of the Plan is to provide a structure that promotes understanding and compliance with the HIPAA Privacy & Security Rules, related provisions of the HITECH Act and applicable Indiana privacy and security laws." Consult this guide to better understand how digital data subject to HIPAA should be handled, and who to contact in your department for questions related to compliance.
