Tip:  be sure to click on Subject Heading for additional resources within the IUCAT record.  For example, Subject Heading: publishers and publishing--United States will provide additional books and electronic resources about book publishing in the United States.  Many books related to publishing and publicity are located in the East Tower, Wells Library, 11th floor.  All current newspapers and periodicals are located in the Current Periodicals Collection.
Opposing Viewpoints

Opposing Viewpoints is an electronic database that contains full-text periodical and news articles, primary sources, statistics and multimedia designed to help you write a critical essay, research a report or term paper, or prepare for a debate.

For example, if you would like to debate the issue of corporate bookstore chains versus independent bookstores, this is an excellent resource to get started.

Historical Perspective

Articles:
To find articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers, search an online library database. Use the "Resource Gateway" on the IUB Libraries' web site to search for a particular database or index by name, alphabetically, or by subject. Some suggestions for this project are:

•  ProQuest Historical New York Times
ProQuest Historical New York Times is an electronic library database that includes full-text of The New York Times newspaper from its first issue in 1851 to two years ago. ProQuest also provides full-text (with varying coverage) of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and Washington Post. To search these four databases simultaneously, access the New York Times, choose "Select Multiple Databases" and scroll down to select the other historic newspapers. This will be useful for finding articles written during the time of your event/social issue.

You can also use the widget below to search all four historical newspaper databases at once.  Give it a try!

ProQuest
Enter your search terms:

•  Readers Guide Retrospective 1890-1982
Reader's Guide Retrospective is an electronic library index that provides citations to 609 of the leading U.S. magazines published from 1890 to 1982, including Publisher's Weekly.   After you get the citations you need, click on the IU Link button available in the database. This feature will direct you to either the article, if it is available in full-text online, or into IUCAT, which will provide the location of the print magazine where the article can be found. This will be useful for finding articles written during the time of your event/social issue.  Keywords:  bookseller, bookselling, publisher, publishing.

•  Lexis-Nexis
Lexis-Nexis is an electronic library database that includes the full-text of newspaper articles for both national, regional, and local news from 1980-present.  This will be useful for finding articles that provide a contemporary look at a historical event or for researching your social issue.

•  Academic Search Premier
Academic Search Premier is an electronic library database that includes a variety of academic disciplines and  provides access to scholarly and popular journal articles, many of which are full-text. This will be useful for finding articles that provide a contemporary look at a historical event or for researching your social issue.

Books: To find books, search IUCAT, the library's online electronic catalog.  IUCAT tells you what materials the IUB Libraries own and where they are located. Some suggestions for this project are:
