CrossFire is a client server system that provides access to the Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry and the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry. Between the two of them, they cover the entire range of modern chemical knowledge from its beginnings in the 18th century.

The Commander software permits searching by structures of chemical substances as well as searches for facts about them. In the case of organic compounds, that includes the ability to use the chemical structures to locate reactions in which the compounds participate.

Access to the client/server system is open to authorized IU users at both the Bloomington and other campuses. In addition to the computers on which the Beilstein Commander software is loaded in the Libraries, users may download the client software and access the database at their own sites both on and off campus. See: for the Beilstein Commander software.
