Database available to authorized IU Bloomington users (on or off campus)
The online version contains articles from either the 4th and 5th editions (the print 5th edition will contain 27-volumes when completed) depending on whether the updates have been completed at the time K-O was purchased. There are bibliographies (often extensive) for each chapter, over 5,000 photos, charts, graphs, figures and tables, in-depth up to-date information on regulations, patents and licensing.
In addition to updating traditional subjects, K-O includes coverage of biotechnology, chemical informatics, materials science, nanotechnology, fullerenes, green chemistry, fuel cells, combinatorial chemistry, chemical warfare, metallocene catalaysts, ionic liquids, computer technology, energy sources and conversion techniques, and environmental issues such as pollution control, toxicology, and recycling technology. There are over 1000 articles in the areas of chemical technology, and will deal with industrial products, natural materials, and processes in such fields as: agricultural chemicals, chemical engineering, coatings and inks, composite materials, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, dyes, pigments and brighteners, ecology and industrial hygiene, energy conservation and technology, fats and waxes, fermentation and enzyme technology, fibers, textiles and leather, food and animal nutrition, fossil fuels and derivatives, glass, ceramics and cement, industrial inorganic chemicals, industrial organic chemicals, metals, metallurgy and metal alloys, plastics and elastomers, semiconductors and electronic materials, surfactants, detergents and emulsion technology, water supply, purification and reuse, wood, paper, and industrial carbohydrates.
