The full text of the New York Times from its first issue in 1851 to present, with a two-year embargo period. Images of the actual texts of articles and of the full page on which the articles appear are presented. Supplements, including the Magazine and the Book Review, are present. Searches can be limited to a supplement or a section only with this command
section(magazine) -OR- section(business)
The text is fully searchable, although some caution is advised. The vendor describes the scanned texts as having an 80% accuracy rate, a very high error rate. The vendor also claims a higher level of accuracy for the citations and abstracts, where available, but errors are readily apparent there as well. It would not be reasonable to conclude that an item searched and not found does not exist. Those events, people and things that can be found using this resource are, however, entirely wonderful.
Additional coverage of the New York Times:
From 1980 to the present the NYT is available in NEXIS (Academic Universe) -- text only, no images
From 1851 to the present (with a lag time of about three months) the IUB Library owns the NYT on microfilm. The microfilm copy is especially important given that some articles are not available in the ProQuest resource because of the Supreme Court's Tasini ruling concerning the copyright rights of independent journalists and writers. ProQuest entries carry a note referring one to the microfilm copy
