Reference Policy (Music Library)

POLICIES AND GUIDELINES FOR REFERENCE SERVICE

The mission of reference service in the Cook Music Library is to provide training and assistance to patrons, enabling them to use the library successfully and conduct their own research on musical subjects. This mission is therefore inseparable from providing "bibliographic instruction" or instruction in "information literacy" in the field of music.

By "patrons" we mean all those who need assistance and training: students and employees of the Indiana University School of Music, other students and employees of Indiana University, residents of Indiana, Indiana University alumni, and members of the general public regardless of domicile.

The Music Library encourages correspondents to use local library resources first. Public, state, academic, and special libraries are often able to respond more quickly to your information needs. Local reference librarians often rely on state, regional, and national library networks to supplement their resources and to provide Interlibrary Loan Services to its clientele.

Once correspondents have exhausted local and regional resources, they may seek assistance from the Music Library. Our staff will respond to their reference and information needs to the extent possible.

The Music Library Reference Department will:

  • Assist patrons in finding the items and information they need.
  • Train patrons to use the library, reference sources, and reference databases.
  • Provide "ready reference" assistance (brief pieces of factual information such as composers' dates).
  • Assist patrons in using the computers in the microcomputer lab.
  • Provide music bibliographic instruction or instruction in music information literacy for Indiana University classes upon request.

The Music Library Reference Department will not:

  • Supply answers to students' homework.
  • Do patrons' research.
  • Research incomplete or inaccurate call numbers and citations for reserve items.
  • Compile bibliographies.
(In all these cases we will provide assistance and training.)
  • Pull more than three books or scores off the shelf and put them on hold at the circulation desk for a patron.

How to Contact Us:

There are many ways to contact a Reference Librarian.  The Music Library offers reference service during the following hours.

    ***Appointments available upon request.***

(The appropriate service may sometimes be to refer or direct the question to another person or source, or to ask the patron to come back at a later specified time.)
