Circulation and Reserve Policies (Geosciences Library)


Circulation Policies 

Borrower Eligibility - All scholars and researchers are welcome to use the resources of the Geosciences Library.  Faculty, staff, students, those officially affiliated with Indiana University, as well as residents of the State of Indiana may charge out material for home or office use.  Most library material circulates; notable exceptions include reference materials and periodicals.    Either an IU ID or Library Borrowers Card must be presented at the circulation counter to charge out material.  Proof of affiliation with Indiana University (Usually an IU photo ID) or photo ID and proof of Indiana residency (usually an Indiana driver's license) is required for activation of a library borrowers account.  A borrower is financially responsible for all material charged out on their Library Borrowers Card.  


Renewals - Renewals may be made online through IUCAT or by email ( or telephone (812-855-1494). 


Returns - Materials may be returned to any library on campus or mailed to Geosciences Library, Room 601 Geology, 1001 E. 10th Street, Bloomington, In 47405. Additionally, there are three outdoor book return drop boxes.  One is located on the South side of the Wells library in the parking lot near the sidewalk that leads up to the building.  Two are located on a small circle drive on 7th street near the Neal Marshall Center to the left as you exit the south end of the "library" parking lot.


Loan Periods

  •          Faculty : 120 day loan
  •          Staff : 120 day loan
  •          Graduate Students and Staff : 120 day loan
  •          Undergraduate Students : 45 day loan
  •          Indiana Residents : 30 day loan. 


Reserve Policies

Reserves are processed by the staff of the  Geosciences Library as quickly as possible.  Requests to place items on Reserve should be emailed to  Please include bibliographic information or a copy of the course syllabus.  The Geosciences Librarian will order materials if not held or request the faculty member bring in a personal copy. 


·         Reserve materials are kept behind the circulation desk.

·         Items may be checked out for 2 hours for use.

·         Materials may be charged out for overnight use 1 hour before closing.

·         They are due back within one hour after opening the next day library is open. (NO EXCUSES…DO NOT CHECK A RESERVE ITEM OUT IF YOU FEAR BAD WEATHER, ILLNESS, ETC. FINES WILL BE CHARGED 2 cents per minute)

·         NO PHONE RENEWALS on Reserve Materials.

·         Items may be renewed if no one else has requested it.

·         If you are waiting for an item to be returned, ask desk staff to put you on the list and stay in the library.

E-Reserves - Oncourse is now the platform for electronic reserves and the E-Reserves site has been fully phased out. Files stored on E-reserves will remain accessible to faculty throughout the 2013 summer session. Instructions for using Oncourse and answers to frequently asked questions about electronic reserves can be found here. However, library staff will still be available to assist with the transition.
