Changes in the East Tower

Wells Library East Tower Entrance

In October, construction is slated to begin in the East Tower. The goal is to create a vibrant, full-service, technology-rich environment that will support scholarly research from curiosity to discovery to publication. The construction process should be complete in late spring. In the meantime, it will affect the first floor of the East Tower for several months, requiring us to relocate certain services temporarily.

What will change:

Items for pickup from Document Delivery Services, Request Delivery, and the Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF) will be available on the 2nd floor of the East Tower, to the left of the elevators.

The West Tower reference desk, located on the first floor under the “Ask Here” sign, will become the main service point for the Reference Services Department.

The Reference Collection will be shifted and all material will be housed within the Reference Reading Room, where an attendant will be on duty to assist library users.

A small number of public computers, scanners, a public printer, a print-release station, and IUCAT express workstations will be available in the Reference Reading Room.

Public photocopiers will be relocated to the second floor of the East Tower between the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning and Government Information, Maps and Microform Services.

Access to the Reference Reading Room will shift to Tenth Street entryway, between the double glass doors.

The ALF Restricted Reading Room will be unavailable during construction, but space to use the materials will be available on the 2nd floor of the East Tower.

There will be a small circulation desk created near the entrance of the East Tower that library patrons may use to check out and return library material.

Other circulation functions will move to the second floor, including the sale of supplies, lost and found, library guest accounts service, making change, and key checkout.

The New Books section will be unavailable during construction but will return once the project is complete and will be situated in a prime location and will include comfortable seating.

What won’t change:

  • Library users will continue to have access to the elevators and stairwell in the East Tower.
  • Current periodicals will remain in the Reference Reading Room.
  • Most library services will remain available to library users during construction though some will be in a new, albeit temporary, location.
  • Librarians and library staff members are happy to help people find what they need.
If you have questions, you can always Ask a Librarian.

Thank you for your patience during this process. We are excited about the coming changes and pleased to provide the experts and environment scholars need to work at the highest levels of education and research.
