Supercharge Your Dissertation Summer

05/03/2013

On Tuesday, April 30, the IUB Libraries, Writing Tutorial Services and GPSO offered their first ever “Supercharge your Dissertation Summer” workshop. 49 graduate students in varying stages of their graduate programs joined us for energizing sessions on strategies for daily writing, research trips, note-taking, citation management, intellectual property rights, publishing and more. To keep everything in perspective, Dr. Chris Meno from IU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) gave a lunch-time presentation on “Staying sane while dissertating.”

“Through our work with graduate students, we’ve realized that there’s a huge unmet need for guidance, encouragement and support as students transition from coursework to dissertating,” explains Celestina Savonius-Wroth, IUL’s history librarian, who helped organize the workshop. “The goal of this workshop was to do something to ease that transition, and judging from the comments we’ve received, it was a step in the right direction. Having CITL [the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, which houses Writing Tutorial Services] and the IU Press here in the Wells Library makes it easier to collaborate on wonderful projects like this.”

The Libraries and WTS are planning to organize future sessions on these and related topics. They’ll be announced through departmental distribution lists and on the Workshops page, www.libraries.iub.edu/workshops
