Lilly Displays Highlights from Collections

Only 21 copies of the first printing of the Declaration of Independence survive.
The Lilly Library is celebrating its diverse holdings by exhibiting some of the many highlights from its collections.

Included in the display are the first printing of the Declaration of Independence (1776), the first edition in Latin of Christopher Columbus' letter following his voyage to the New World (1493), George Washington's letter to Patrick Henry refusing pecuniary reward for his services during the Revolutionary War (1785), the Coverdale Bible (1535), literary manuscripts of Sylvia Plath, Raymond Carver, and Edith Wharton, examples of the Library's medieval manuscripts, scientific works, fine bindings, and more.
