Launch of new site on Indiana Authors and their Books
10/05/2011
The new online Indiana Authors and their Books, a
collaboration between the IU Digital Library Program and the IU
Libraries' Technical Services Department, provides full-text
digitized copies of some of the most important texts published
during Indiana's first 100 years of statehood. This project was
supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under
the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act,
administered by the Indiana State Library.
Approximately 400 titles are now available, with full encoded text for all books and scanned images for many of them. Catalog records with links to these titles are currently being added to IUCAT, the IU Libraries online catalog, and OCLC WorldCat, the largest online catalog in the world. The three-volume encyclopedia Indiana Authors and Their Books will be added in Spring 2012 and will be searchable with links to the full-text collection.
In A History of Indiana Literature (1962), Arthur Shumaker characterizes literary output by Indiana authors during that decade as one of the more significant contributions to American literature made by any state or region. Some of the authors – such as George Ade, Kin Hubbard, Edward Eggleston, and Maurice Thompson – are famous primarily within the state. Others – including Theodore Dreiser, Gene Stratton, James Whitcomb Riley, Booth Tarkington, and Lew Wallace – established national reputations.
About the IU Digital Library
Program
The IU Digital Library Program is a collaborative effort of the Indiana University Libraries, University Information Technology Services, and the university research faculty with leadership from the School of Library and Information Science and School of Informatics and Computing. This collaboration capitalizes on the institutional capabilities of Indiana University, focusing university resources on digital library services and projects that support the teaching and research of IU faculty, support the learning and research of IU students, and foster research about the digital library.
