The IU Libraries are pleased to announce the winner of
the 2010 Sam Burgess Undergraduate Student Library Research
Award.
Senior Samantha Benson won first place
and $1,000 for her research project entitled, “Trouser

Figaro: Implications for Gender Constructions in Eighteenth
Century Europe.” Benson was nominated by Rebecca Spang,
Professor of History.
Professor Spang described Benson's work as
“beautifully written and professionally
presented,” and that it “showed remarkable creativity
in bringing musicological scholarship to bear on issues of gender
identify in eighteenth-century culture.”
The selection committee commented that “her paper shows
sophistication and originality through its structured and
well-written presentation” and that “Samantha
demonstrates a firm command of the research process.”
Benson was recognized Thursday, April 22 at a reception
hosted by the IU Libraries to honor achievements of librarians,
staff, and volunteers.
The Sam Burgess Undergraduate Library Award recognizes excellence
in undergraduate research projects by rewarding students who
incorporate extraordinary skill and creativity in the application
of the services and collections of the IU Libraries.
Winners are selected by a committee of librarians and members of
the Bloomington Faculty Council Library Committee.
Established in 2007, the award is supported by an endowment
started by an IUB librarian in memory of her late son, a
voracious and eclectic reader. Her support of this endowment also
recognizes the importance of the IU Libraries to undergraduate
education.
