Example of batik on display in the Wells Library
Finding the information you need can be tricky business. We have many, many great resources here at IU, but we don't have everything.
If we don't have what you need, we can help you find it by providing the tools to dig deeper. Identify search terms approved by the Library of Congress, for example, or probe international intergovernmental agencies.
Andrea Singer, our foreign documents librarian, put these tools to practice to demonstrate their value: she created a new exhibit and Web site to highlight the international activities of Stanley Ann Dunham, mother of President Barack Obama.
The exhibit, on the second floor of the Herman B Wells Library (east tower, near the elevator), celebrates UNESCO’s commitment to cultural heritage by focusing on the artform of batik, the latest addition to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List from Indonesia.
Dunham's batik collection toured the United States this summer, and the exhibit also highlights her professional life. IU’s copy of her Ph.D. dissertation (Hawaii, 1992) forms the centerpiece of the display.
Information about Dunham came from sources featured in Tips for Digging Deeper.
