1) IU WorldCat Offers Added Value; Complements
IUCAT
IU WorldCat, a local version of the powerful worldwide catalog of library materials, offers advantages over IUCAT.
Among them:
- Search more than 60 million journal articles from within the catalog.
- Search using non-Roman language scripts, such as Japanese, Chinese, or Hebrew.
- Find and request books IU doesn’t own.
IUCAT, the original catalog, remains a valuable means of
access to IU’s collections. See differences
between IUCAT and IU WorldCat.
Adoption of IU WorldCat responds to survey results that showed general dissatisfaction with IUCAT as a means to find targeted materials on particular topics.
Search IUWorldCat.

2) BFC Minutes Searchable Online
Minutes of Bloomington Faculty Council meetings (1997-2007) and accompanying circulars are now available in a searchable database created by the Digital Library Program, the Office of University Archives and Records Management, and the Faculty Council Office.
Minutes for the ongoing project will be added as they are
available.
Search Bloomington
Faculty Council Minutes.

3) Nominate Undergraduates for Research Award
Plan now to nominate an undergraduate for our annual
research award. The IUB Libraries will again recognize
excellence in undergraduate research projects when
the annual awards are made in May.
The Sam Burgess Undergraduate Student Library Research
Award recognizes two students who incorporate extraordinary skill
and creativity in the application of the services and collections
of the IUB Libraries. Awards are $1,000 and $500.
Faculty members must nominate students and write a letter of
support. Submissions will be evaluated by a faculty panel that
includes members of the Bloomington Faculty Council Library
Committee as well as two librarians.
Application deadline is March 13, 2009.

and nomination form.

4) Media Preservation Survey Underway
IUB is home to a large number of audio, video, and film
collections that are historically significant and carry enduring
research value. It is estimated that IUB holds over 100,000 hours
of unique content in these formats. Deterioration of the
materials themselves and obsolescence of playback machines
threaten these important holdings.
To begin addressing their long-term preservation needs, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research has funded a preservation survey. Data (including formats, condition, percent digitized, and access) for the survey will be gathered by visiting content holders and evaluating their media collections directly.

survey.

5) Unbound Periodicals Relocated in Wells Library
Current unbound periodicals and newspapers have been
relocated to a newly named department on the second floor of the
Herman B Wells Library: Government
Information and Kent Cooper Services.
The department provides services and assistance for its
collections of government information, microforms and current
periodicals. Specialized equipment is available for reading,
printing or scanning microform materials and for
copying/scanning periodicals and fragile materials with a
cradle
copier.
Periodicals and newspapers have long occupied a space on
the ground floor named for Kent
Cooper, an Indiana newspaperman who headed the
Associated Press. Records in IUCAT will be changed to reflect the
new location of Wells Library—East Tower 2—Kent
Cooper Room.
Media
and Reserve Services remains in its present
location on the ground floor of the Wells Library.

6) Tips for Making Your Research More Accessible
As producers and consumers of research, you have an
enormous impact on the new models of scholarly
communication. These models are based on open access,
digital publishing, and a move towards interdependent and
self-sustaining publishing platforms by colleges and
universities. The publishing decisions you make shape the future
of scholarly communications.
Take advantage of IUScholarWorks. Learn ways to increase the
accessibility and impact of your research.

7) Advance Your Teaching Goals
Whether consulting about one assignment or teaching an
entire class, librarians can help you advance your teaching
goals.
Like you, librarians want students to think critically, to
find the best information they can, and to succeed in the
classroom. In just a few short academic cycles, information
fluency standards will become part of the university’s core
undergraduate curriculum.
