1) IU Named First CIC Partner in Google Agreement
Indiana University was selected as the first Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) library to participate in the Google Book Project since the CIC partnership agreement was announced in June 2007.
The agreement calls for Google to scan and digitize selected
titles from the collections of partnering libraries. IU's first
shipment of books leaves on August 20 for scanning.
To minimize the impact in any particular area, we will pull books
from a broad range for each shipment. Books may be unavailable
for a maximum of three months and will be flagged as such in
IUCAT. You may wish to request a book through interlibrary loan
to obtain it sooner.
The University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin, both
already working with Google to digitize their materials, entered
agreements with Google prior to the CIC partnership.
The CIC is a consortium of 12 research universities, including
the 11 members of the Big Ten Conference and the University of
Chicago.
2) Google Books Added to IUCAT
IUCAT now links to Google Book Search, making previews and tables
of contents and in some cases full text available for selected
items.
Records in IUCAT link to books Google has digitized in a
long-term effort to create a worldwide online library. Some books
are available online in their entirety, but for others with
copyright restriction you will only see "snippets" of the
text.
For catalog records that link to either previews or digitized
books, an icon for Google Book Search appears in IUCAT at the
right of the screen.
3) Life Sciences Collections Relocated
Most of the collections in the Life Sciences Library in Jordan
Hall were moved this summer to the Ruth Lilly Auxiliary Library
Facility (ALF) and the Wells Library. A small collection of
heavily used materials will remain in the Life Sciences
Library.
Materials relocated from the Life Sciences Library will be
available via rapid delivery through the Libraries "Request
Delivery" and "Request Article Delivery" services.
The ALF, an off-site shelving facility, provides ideal
preservation conditions and ready access to materials. Items
requested from the ALF are delivered six days a week to 22 campus
locations, usually the same day if requested before noon.
4) New Look for Web Site
A redesigned Web site for the IUB Libraries will launch in
mid-August. The site will function as it currently does, but have
a new look that's both easier to use and better integrates the
site with other campus units.
The Search function and the Resource Gateway, Services, and
Subjects menus will continue to be primary means to navigate the
site, which comprises more than 3,500 pages and provides access
to more than 400 databases and 43,000 electronic
journals.
