Artists' Books, Kids, and Literacy

07/17/2003

The Fine Arts Library is exhibiting the work of book and paper artist Paul Johnson, a scholar recognized internationally for his pioneering work in developing literacy through the book arts.

The exhibition celebrates the Community Literacies Project and Book Arts Seminar, a community-wide event designed by educators, artists, librarians, and media specialists to explore bookmaking with children and families to promote reading, writing, and the arts.  The seminar is sponsored by the Monroe County Public Library and the Monroe County Community School Corporation.

Johnson, a senior lecturer in art education at Manchester Polytechnic in England, is author of Literacy Through the Book Arts and A Book of One's Own: Developing Literacy Through Making Books. He combines his work as a writer and teacher with his career as a paper artist with works at the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York and Yale University. He has been profiled on BBC Television.

The Fine Arts Library is nationally recognized for its collection of  more than 600 artists’ books, including many created by IU students and faculty.

The exhibition  will be on display July 18 through July 23, 2003.
