1) Nominate Undergraduates for Research Awards

Plan now to nominate an undergraduate for our annual research award. The IUB Libraries will again recognize excellence in undergraduate research projects when the annual awards are made in May.

The Sam Burgess Undergraduate Research Award recognizes two students who incorporate extraordinary skill and creativity in the application of the services and collections of the IUB Libraries. Awards are $1,000 and $500.

Faculty members must nominate students and write a letter of support. Submissions will be evaluated by a faculty panel that includes members of the Bloomington Faculty Council Library Committee as well as two librarians.

Application deadline is March 2.

View the guidelines and nomination form.

2) Library Research Materials Now Integrated Into
OnCourse CL

There's an easy new way to improve the quality of information your students use in their coursework, thanks to value-added enhancement to OnCourse CL created by a team of librarians and programmers from the IUB Libraries.

Subject-specific databases are now integrated into the university's course management tool. By providing your students seamless access to library research materials, we're helping them connect to trustworthy information without having to leave the OnCourse environment.

Links take students to databases selected by librarians as those most relevant for your discipline.

You can further customize this feature by working with a librarian to create a set of resources that complement your class. Librarians will select resources to suit your students' needs and make these resources available in a singular, class-specific location.

We'll create guides for an assignment or course to encourage your students to use appropriate information sources in their projects and papers. These class-tailored Web pages will automatically appear in your class OnCourse site as well as on the Libraries' Web site.

Complete a brief online request form and our subject specialists will create the page for you.

For examples of such pages: visit our class pages.

3) New Look, Features for IUCAT

IUCAT, the university's online catalog with more than 5.6 million titles, has a new look and new features.

Upgraded in December, the catalog now features a streamlined interface to help reduce search errors. You can now also search for DVDs/videos, sound recordings, and E-books, and sort any of your searches by relevance. GoogleBooks and WorldCat are now one click away.

You should log in to IUCAT at the beginning of your search. Logging in allows you to access the full text from off-campus when available and ensures you won't lose your search results if you later decide to renew library materials or request delivery of articles.

Note that off-campus users of the catalog must log in twice.

On January 21 we will introduce additional upgrades: Look for content about many recent American books, including cover art and a selection of information such as summaries, tables of contents, and reviews.

Learn more about IUCAT here,or click on "new features" on the banner message on each IUCAT screen.

4) Increase the Impact of Your Research

Your research deserves to be seen, cited, and preserved. IU ScholarWorks can help.

IU ScholarWorks is a digital repository for disseminating and preserving scholarly work created at Indiana University. Add your documents to IUScholarWorks with the certainty they will be maintained by the IU Libraries and the IU Digital Library Program.

Your materials, open to the world, will also be more easily discovered. Other researchers have found that depositing their research in a service like IUScholarWorks increases its citation impact. You'll find that with little effort, you gain heightened visibility and new readers.

Questions? Contact Julie Bobay, Interim Director for Scholarly Communication Initiatives, IUB Libraries, bobay@indiana.edu or 855-7743.

5) EndNote Now Web-Based

Access your EndNote libraries anywhere, thanks to our new subscription to the popular citation management software.

We've purchased access to the new EndNote Web, which allows you to manage your citation libraries online, anytime. Create EndNote Web accounts free of charge at www.myendnoteweb.com.

With EndNote Web, you can:

·Share libraries with colleagues

·Upload records from your regular EndNote libraries into EndNote Web libraries

·Download records directly from Endnote Web into regular EndNote

·Save records from EndNote Web for import into regular EndNote libraries

6) You Spoke, We're Responding

In spring 2006, the IUB Libraries surveyed a random sampling of students and faculty as part of a nationwide survey administered by the Association of Research Libraries. 1,078 faculty members responded.

What we learned

We last issued the survey in 2002. Generally, satisfaction among faculty with library collections, services, and facilities remained consistent or higher than findings in the previous survey. You are generally pleased with the high quality of the IUB Libraries and told us so.

Two areas emerged as points of concern: 1) The library as a space that inspires study and learning; and 2) the Web site that enables you to locate information on your own.

The Web site emerged as the only survey metric to fall below minimally acceptable levels. (You found it to be busy or cluttered; had difficulty in deciding where to start; and voiced difficulty navigating the site or getting "lost" when using it.)

What we're doing about it

Plans are well under way to launch a new Web site this summer. It will fundamentally change from one that is navigation-driven to one that is search-driven.Faculty have participated in interviews and focus groups, and we will continue to seek faculty input.

We are working now to centralize content and to eliminate redundancy from the more than 3,600 pages that make up the site.

In May 2006 the Trustees of Indiana University approved our plans to renovate the Reference Reading Room of the Wells Library. With help from the IU Architect's Office, we've designed an inspiring environment that takes advantage of the room's generous natural light and proximity to our prized research collections. We are now seeking funds to make the design a reality.

7) Federal Documents: 125 years and counting

For 125 years the IU Libraries have served as a Federal Depository Library through a program established by Congress to ensure broad access to information produced by the federal government.

Reprints of documents ranging from Union and Confederate Army records to the Pentagon Papers can be found in the Government Information, Microforms and Statistical Services Department, located on the second floor of the Wells Library. Almost all federal documents are in the public domain and may be used without worry of copyright infringement.

Although government information from 1995 forward is readily available online, most older documents are not yet digitized.

8) ALF Advantage

Obtaining items from the Ruth Lilly Auxiliary Library Facility is a straightforward process with a proven record of success. In November 2006, we delivered more than 2,800 items.

When you request an item from the ALF, you can expect:

  • Full same-day delivery service Monday through Saturday. (Unmatched by any other academic library in the country.)
  • Delivery to 22 destinations. (The number of available delivery options for patrons at other institutions who have remote facilities is frequently one and often just 2 or 3.)
  • Electronic delivery of print journal articles owned by the IUB Libraries.
Fully 25 percent of patron requests for ALF materials are delivered electronically. We scan articles and book chapters and deliver them to you via e-mail.You don't have to find a parking place, and the materials never have to leave the ALF—unless, of course, you request them.

Questions about ALF delivery? Contact Sherri Michaels, interim head, Customer and Access Services at shmichae@indiana.edu

9) Help Us Help You

We're always looking for faculty input as we strive to improve our services and products. If you're interested in participating in a focus group, please add your name to our growing list and we'll contact you when the need arises.

Send your name to ebarthel@indiana.edu
