Exhibit Highlights Fine Bindings at the Lilly Library
11/16/2006
"A Fine Way" highlights the Lilly's bookbinding collections and pays tribute to those who perpetuate the craft of artistic bookbinding. The exhibition looks at the evolution of the creative binder, beginning with the revival of the craft tradition initiated by William Morris and T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, founders of the Kelmscott Press and Doves Press respectively, and examines their lasting influence on modern hand bookbinding. Over 20 binders are highlighted, whose unique creative visions and superb hand skills finesse the fine raw materials of paper, leather and gold to obtain a unified binding celebrating the work of the author, illustrator and printer.
Among these talented binders, the Lilly is proud to exhibit the works of Sydney Cockerell, Roger Powell, Michael Wilcox, Edgar Mansfield, James Brockman, Tim Ely, Philip Smith, and Don Glaister. Several miniature bindings have also been chosen from the collection of Ruth Adomeit. The Lilly continues to add to its collections of fine bindings, recently commissioning bindings from Michael Wilcox and Tim Ely.
