1) Web Site Now Features Faculty Portal
The IUB Libraries Web Site now features a portal designed with your needs in mind. Library services targeted to faculty are now in one place. Most services are also still available in the ways you have learned to access them.
The portal, available from every screen on the site, provides links to research, publication, and teaching resources. Similar portals exist for undergraduate and graduate students, visitors, and distance learners.
Links for the portals appear near the top of each Web page.
The search function has also been improved to produce a more focused set of results and to list matches from our major resources first.
Visit the faculty portal.
Use the new search function.
2) Give Your Scholarly Materials a Permanent Home
Your research deserves to be seen, cited, and preserved. IU ScholarWorks can help.
IU ScholarWorks is a digital repository for disseminating and preserving scholarly work created at Indiana University. Add your documents to IUScholarWorks with the certainty they will be maintained by the IU Libraries and the IU Digital Library Program.
Your materials, open to the world, will also be more easily discovered. Other researchers have found that depositing their research in a service like IUScholarWorks increases its citation impact. You'll find that with little effort, you gain heightened visibility and new readers.
For more information, visit www.scholarworks.iu.edu.
Questions? Contact Julie Bobay, Interim Director for Scholarly Communication Initiatives, IUB Libraries, bobay@indiana.edu or 855-7743.
3) Add Library Resources to OnCourse
In a few easy steps you can encourage students to use trustworthy information sources by adding a library page to OnCourse.
In OnCourse, from the Site Setup option at the left margin, go to Edit Tools. Click on Library Resources to add the page. The page allows students to search databases by subject, to search E-reserves, and to e-mail a librarian.
You can further customize this feature by working with a librarian to create a set of resources that complement your class. Librarians will select resources to suit your students' needs and make these resources available in a singular, class-specific location. For examples of such pages: visit our class pages.
To create a customized set of resources, contact libinst@indiana.edu.
4) New Director of Public Services and New Head of Reference
Two personnel changes recently took effect: JB Hill joined the IUB Libraries as the Director of Public Services on September 5. JB was formerly the Head of Reference at the Sims Memorial Library at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La., where he was responsible for developing and overseeing all activities of the reference department, for-credit library instruction, user education, and distance learning services.
Mary Strow was named Head of the Wells Library Reference Department, also this month. Mary was formerly Head of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Library and Coordinator of the Branch Libraries.
5) Need to Return a Book? Drive and Drop
You can now return your books and videos without scavenging for a parking space at the Wells Library. Three book-return receptacles are now located south of the library: one at the end of the sidewalk leading to the main entrance, and two at the Seventh Street turnaround just north of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. Remember that books may also be returned at any branch library.
And to speed up your transactions at the front end of the process, a self-service check-out machine located near the circulation desk in the Wells Library east tower offers you the option of checking out your own materials. Simply scan your ID, scan the book, and you're out the door. Elect to have your charge slip sent to your e-mail rather than printing it out.
6) Videos from Instructional Support Services now in Wells Library
About 8,000 videos collected to provide curriculum support for all academic disciplines were transferred to the Wells Library in August. The collection, formerly managed by Instructional Support Services, complements the IUB Libraries teaching media collection of 12,000 videos and 1,500 DVDs. Martha Harsanyi, who managed the collection and whom many of you know, has joined the staff of the IUB Libraries.
We are working to integrate these collections, but until the transferred videos are cataloged in IUCAT, you should view the video titles in their separate database.
Go to: database of films.
Or see additional media-related information: Kent Cooper Room Services

Martha Harsanyi, Media Reference Coordinator, harsanyi@indiana.edu or 855-8065.
Monique Threatt, Associate Head, Kent Cooper Room Services, IUB Libraries libmedia@indiana.edu or 855-1650.
7) Get Help with E-Reserves
We've trained more than 150 instructors to post articles to the Web through the electronic reserve system operated by the IUB Libraries. Although the number of instructors opting to post their own reserve materials continues to grow, staff of the IUB Libraries will continue to post your articles for you if you wish.
After you give students the password to your secure site, they can read the required assignments 24/7. Post the materials yourself with little effort or consult our staff for assistance.
Any printed or electronic material (for example, journal articles, book sections, class notes, or links to web resources) that meets copyright guidelines for fair use is eligible for posting.
Questions?
Contact Sherri Michaels, Interim Head, Customer and Access Services, shmichae@indiana.edu or 855-9294.
Learn more about electronic reserves.
8) PBS's History Detective Celebrates IU's Collections
A monthlong celebration highlighting archives and special collections will give students insight to the research process and the value of primary sources. Visit the schedule of events now to find extra-credit opportunities for your students.
During the month of October, authors, historians, researchers, and genealogists from IU and the community will speak about the research process. Highlighted speaker is Wes Cowan, star of the popular PBS show History Detectives, who will speak at the Indiana Memorial Union on October 12 at 4 p.m.
See full list of events.
9) Libraries Invite Faculty to Explore Scholarly Publishing
The IUB Libraries, with the IUPUI University Library, will host a symposium at the end of the month to jumpstart a discussion about the changes in scholarly publication and how these changes impact your research, rights, and needs.
Funded by IU's New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities Program, the seminar invites selected faculty members from the humanities to explore relevant issues in scholarly communications.
The symposium builds on observations outlined in the American Council of Learned Societies' Commission on Cyberinfrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
View the report.
10) Tour the Auxiliary Library Facility
The ALF vault is one of the coolest places on campus—literally. ("Almost the exact climate of Mammoth Cave," says Vaughn Nuest, who manages operations there.) Kept at a chilly 50 degrees and 30 percent humidity, the conditions can add up to 400 years to the life of a book.
Learn firsthand how books make their way to and from this off-site facility located on the edge of campus at the following times:
Thursday, October 5: 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, October 25: 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Directions: Traveling eastbound on Tenth Street, cross the Bypass and continue to the first traffic light. Turn left onto North Range Road. Follow Range Road to the ALF.
Questions?
Contact Vaughan Nuest, Head, ALF Management Services, vnuest@indiana.edu or 856-0832.
11) Nominate Your Students for Undergraduate Research Awards
It's not too early to begin identifying students to nominate for our annual undergraduate research award. The IUB Libraries will again recognize excellence in undergraduate research projects when the annual awards are made next spring. Winning projects will incorporate extraordinary skill and creativity in the application of the services and collections of the IUB Libraries. Awards will be $1,000 and $500.
Faculty members must nominate students and write a letter of support. Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of faculty who are members of the Bloomington Faculty Council Library Committee and two librarians.
View the guidelines and nomination form.
