Annual MLK Film Festival
When: Monday, January 16
Where: Wells Library Media Showing Room (E174)
Playing Unfair: The Media Image of the Female Athlete
10:00 am - 10:30 a.m
It has been 30 years since Title IX legislation granted equal playing time, but the male-dominated world of sports journalism has yet to catch up with the law. Coverage of women's sports lags far behind men's and focuses on female athletes' femininity and sexuality over their achievements on the court and field.
Million Dollar Baby
10:45 am - 1 pm
"Clint Eastwood stars in the role of Frankie Dunn, a down-on-his-luck former boxing manager who spends the twilight years of his life running a small, dilapidated gym in downtown Los Angeles. Frankie lets a succession of great boxers slip through his fingers. But when the brash, confident young boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) strides into the gym, Frankie's life is irretrievably altered. The combination of Maggie's talent and Frankie's tutelage paves the way for the adroit fighter to rise steadily through the ranks of women's boxing."
A Knock Out
1:15 pm - 2:15 pm
"Boxing champion Michele Aboro grew up in South London, where life for a girl was never easy, let alone for a mixed-race lesbian girl. Thanks to her tenacious spirit and uncanny talent for combat sports, she put her difficult past behind her and managed to sign a contract with the biggest boxing promoter in Europe. She won all 21 fights, 18 of them with a knockout--an exceptional achievement in women's boxing. Her career came to a sudden halt when her promoter broke her contract under the belief that she was not 'promotable.' Refusing to vamp up her image, this undefeated world champion was abandoned by an industry more interested in selling sex than sport." --www.wmm.com
Bend It Like Beckham
2:30 pm - 4:15 pm
Eighteen-year-old Jesminder's parents want her to be a nice, conventional Indian girl. But she just wants to play soccer like her hero, David Beckham. For Jess, that means kicking a ball around the local park with the lads until she's spotted by Jules, who invites her to join the local women's team.
