Professor Brings Newton to Digital Library Program

11/16/2005

Dr. William Newman, professor of History and Philosophy of Science at IU, is working in collaboration with John Walsh, associate director for projects and services for Indiana University's Digital Library Program, and Cathrine Reck, assistant professor in the Chemistry department, to edit and produce an online scholarly edition of Sir Isaac Newton's notebooks on alchemy.

The project, called The Chymistry of Isaac Newton, is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

About 500 of a projected 2,000 pages have been transcribed and encoded in TEI/XML. Approximately 250 pages have been edited and are available online.

Newman's project also involves replicating some of Newton's experiments and was the subject of a NOVA documentary called Newton's Dark Secrets. The documentary originally aired Tuesday, November 15.

A complete press release is available through Indiana University Media Relations.
