Indiana University is participating in GIS Day, a global event designed to demonstrate GIS (geographic information systems) technology and teach how geography affects our lives. The event will be held Thursday, November 17, at the IMU in the Frangipani Room from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GIS Day at IU is part of Geography Awareness Week, which takes place the third week in November. This year’s theme is Migration: The Human Journey.

As part of the event, the Geology Library has set up links to maps showing the ancestry of Indiana residents. The maps, based on U.S. Census Bureau statistics, were produced with a GIS, which is computer hardware, software, and data used to map, store, and analyze geographically referenced information. Also featured is a PDF of a poster with all maps showing Indiana Ancestry, Ethnicity and Race.

Undergraduate and graduate students have submitted posters on unique ways GIS can be used as part of a contest. The winning poster will be displayed in the Geography/Map Library through the end of November.
