"Hey Man, Can you Spare a Job?"

This thought-provoking film "explores the impact of low-wage foreign competition on American's workers, families and communities."

Robert Goehlert, Librarian for Economics, Criminal Justice, Political Science and Global Studies will lead a discussion immediately following the screening about issues raised in the film.

PBS Frontline:  Is Wal-Mart Good for America?
  (60min., 2004)


FRONTLINE offers two starkly contrasting images: one of empty storefronts in Circleville, Ohio; the other, a sea of high rises in the South China boomtown of Shenzhen. What’s the connection between American job losses and soaring Chinese exports?  Wal-Mart.  For Wal-Mart, China has become the cheapest, most reliable production platform in the world, the source of up to $25 billion in annual imports that help the company deliver everyday low prices.

Farmingville   (78min., 2002)

Filmmakers Catherine Tambini and Carlos Sandoval document the next group of immigrants, the Mexicans, that are following in our long history of immigration. It looks at the people of Farmingville, New York, a community of 15,000 citizens, and how they are dealing with the influx of 1,500 Mexican workers.

Luis Gonzalez, Librarian for Latin American, Caribbean, Spanish and Portuguese will lead a discussion immediately following the screening about issues raised in the film.
