IUB Libraries present the 2004 Media Literacy Fall Series:

Films that depict the Presidential Election & More

All films are free and open to the public.  Light snacks will be provided.

Wag the Dog (1997, 97 min.)
After being caught in a scandalous situation days before the election, the president does not seem to have much of a chance of being re-elected.  One of his advisors (Robert DeNiro) contacts a top Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) in order to manufacture a war in Albania that the president can heroically end, all through mass media.

Robert Goehlert, Librarian for Economics, Criminal Justice, Political Science and Global Studies will lead a discussion immediately following the screening about issues raised in the film.

Date: Tuesday, October 5, 2004
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Location: Main Library, E174

The Candidate (1972, 109 min.)
California lawyer Bill McKay (Robert Redford) fights for the little man.  His charisma and integrity get him noticed by the Democratic Party machine and he is persuaded to run for the Senate against an apparently unassailable incumbent.  It's agreed he can handle it his own way, on his own terms.  But once he's in the race and his prospects begin to improve, the deal starts to change.

Robert Goehlert, Librarian for Economics, Criminal Justice, Political Science and Global Studies will lead a discussion immediately following the screening about issues raised in the film.

Date: Tuesday, October 19, 2004
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Location: Main Library, E174

Spellbound (2002, 95 min.)
Independent filmmaker Jeff Blitz documents eight American children as they make their way to compete in the 1999 National Spelling Bee in Washington DC.  The spellers that Blitz chooses to focus on come from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.  The film is an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature.
