Books and Journals in Print (Chemistry Library)

Finding and Locating Materials in the Collection

Use IUCAT, the computerized catalog of holdings for all of the Indiana University Libraries, to determine whether material is located in the Chemistry Library. Searches can be performed by author, title, periodical title, series, subject, or keyword. Materials published before 1976 may not yet be found in IUCAT, although this is becoming less frequent as the retrospective conversion project is being completed. Please consult with a library staff if you have any questions about the availability of materials.

Circulating Books

Books, monographs, textbooks, and other materials are found in the stacks.

Reference Materials

Reference materials are the books, encyclopedias, journals, and other items kept in the Reference Area. All reference materials have a yellow dot on them near the call number. The Reference Area materials, including abstracting and indexing journals, are arranged by call number.

Some Items in the Reference area include:

  • Chemical Abstracts [since 2000 only available online via SciFinder Scholar]
  • Science Citation Index [print-only volumes 1961-1976, more recent online-only]
  • Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry [now online]
  • Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry [now online]
  • Analytical Abstracts [online coverage begins in 1980]

Dissertations / Theses

Dissertations and theses written by master's and doctoral students are not physically housed in the Chemistry Library. There are circulating copies of dissertations and theses in the Auxiliary Library Facility (B-ALF) or in the Wells Library Research Collections. Most chemistry dissertations and theses have QD1000 as the call number.  B-ALF) is an off-site Bloomington Library storage location. Materials at this location will be delivered to a Bloomington Library of your choice. A "Request this item" link appears next to every item owned by B-ALF. Circulating items from the Wells Library may be requested via "Request Delivery" through IUCAT.

Review serials are publications which usually appear annually to survey the progress in different areas of chemistry. They are shelved with the circulating books if they come to us bound and with the Bound Journal Collection if they are received as unbound separate issues.

How to find out what review serials are in the collection

  1. Check the title in IUCAT
  2. Search IUCAT using a keyword search. For example, chemistry and (review or reviews or advances or progress or annual), selecting Blmgtn--Chemistry Library (B-CHEM) as the library.

Finding title of review serials that may not be in the IU Libraries Collection

Consult the book Chemical Information Sources by Gary Wiggins (Chemistry Library Reserves QD8.5 .W54 1991) for the tables 9.7 (analytical chemistry), 10.10 (physical chemistry), 11.12 (organic, inorganic, and biochemistry).
