American Rhetoric
Use American Rhetoric to find audio, video and full-text of hundreds of speeches. If you are choosing your topic, this is a good place to star.
These talks are contemporary speeches by professionals in a wide variety of business, scientific, and creative fields.

Media Review Speech/ Informative Speech/ Advocacy Speech
If you would like to look for print resources, search IUCAT, IU's online library catalog. The libraries' catalog will tell you what books, magazines, journals, movies, sound recordings, government publications, etc. the IU Libraries own. In addition, you may be able to find visual aids in our book collections or sound recordings to use during your speech. To search for materials of this sort, type "your topic" in the "Keywords Anywhere" box and click "Search".

Use Academic Search Premier to find articles, both scholarly/academic and popular, that identify and analyze current topics. This resource includes almost all academic areas of study—social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies. Besides full-text articles, Academic Search Premier contains a database of images.
This database provides articles devoted to individual, timely topics ranging from school violence to homelessness in America. Each entry includes complete summaries, insight into all sides of the issues, chronologies of events, presentation of the current situation and future steps to be taken, and bibliographies you can use to take you further in your research.
Opposing Viewpoints in Context
Use Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center to obtain background on the exigence of your speech. This database contains essays written from various viewpoints on controversial issues (i.e. race relations, feminism, terrorism, etc.). Links to journal articles, websites, statistics, primary documents, etc. are provided when relevant or available.
AP Photo Archive is an electronic library containing the Associated Press' current photos and a selection of pictures from their 50 million print image and negative library. The Photo Archive contains approximately 500,000 photos, and hundreds of news photos enter the database each day from around the world. A similar number of historical images are scanned in each week.
Local News
This is the online version of the local Bloomington newspaper, The Herald Times. Use this resource to identify and research current, local issues. (NOTE: HeraldTimesOnline archives are only available without a fee from workstations in the IUB Wells Library building or the Journalism Library.)
Indiana Daily Student
This is the online version of the Indiana Daily Student newspaper. It is updated daily, with searchable archives that go back to 1997. Use this website to identify and gather information about local issues.
National and International News
Ethnic NewsWatch
Ethnic NewsWatch may present controversial issues that have not been thoroughly covered by the mainstream press and/or a different perspective on popular issues. Full-text articles from newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority, and native press in America are included. Subjects covered include news, culture, and history.
Lexis-Nexis Academic
Use Lexis-Nexis Academic to obtain full-text articles from U.S. and international newpapers and magazines or broadcast television news show transcripts. Sometimes you may find articles that were written about your speech in its geographic location, which can give local audience and/or press reaction.
New York Times (ProQuest Historical Newspapers, 1851-2006)
Use the ProQuest Historical New York Times to find articles that were written during the time your speech took place and to reconstruct its history. To search other historical newspapers, choose "Select Multiple Databases" and scroll down to select additional historic newspapers that can be searched simultaneously.
Television News Archive
This is the world's most available, extensive and complete archive of major network television news. The database currently includes 725,000 entries for regular evening news and special news programs. These broadcasts cover presidential press conferences and political campaigns, national and international events such as the Watergate hearings, the plight of American hostages in Iran, the Persian Gulf war, and the terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001.World News Digest provides access to summaries of domestic and international news, from 1940 to the present. Maps, charts, graphs, and historic photographs are included, as well as editorial cartoons, a Resource Center, suggested research topics, and an index of stories by country, decade, or topic.

The Indiana University website contains many statistics related to the faculty, staff, students, and issues surrounding the university. For further information, you may want to contact university offices or personnel. Many offices will have their contact information on their web page, or use the "Find People" website.
The Monroe County Public Library
The local public library, located at 303 E. Kirkwood Ave, is an excellent resource for information about local issues.
Polling Resources
The Gallup Organization
Contains links to the lastest news stories and the results of public opinion polls on current issues. You can search more than 125,000 poll questions that have been asked since 1935. See below for instructions on how to use this resource.
Polling the Nation
Polling the Nation is a compilation of more than 14,000 surveys conducted by more than 700 polling organizations in the U.S. and more than 80 other countries from 1986 to the present. Use this resource to research the differing perspectives that surround your issue. Search by topic, poll question, geographic area, date, survey organization, or resondent category (i.e. men, women, ethnicity, etc.).
