Geological Databases

GeoRef - Index to World literature in the geosciences that has been published since 1785. GeoRef indexes articles in journals and books, as well as books, maps, government publications, conference proceedings, technical reports, theses and dissertations. GeoScienceWorld - A comprehensive Internet resource for research and communications in the geosciences.


USGS National Geologic Map Database - An index to published geologic maps and other types of maps related to geology.


USGS Publications Warehouse - Search for USGS Publications, with access to digitized and digital publications.

GEOLEX - The Lexicon of North American Geology, an index to resources related to named geologic rock formations in North America.


GNIS - Geographic Names Information System is an index to place names in the United States and U.S. Territories that appear on 7.5" topographic maps.


GEOnet - GEOnet Names Server is a database of of foreign geographic feature names approved by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names.

Paleontological Databases
Bibliography of Fossil Vertebrates - A database to the literature on Vertebrate Paleontology from 1509-1958 and 1981 - 1993.


Bibliography and Index of Paleozoic Crinoids, Coronates, and Hemistreptocrinoids 1758-1999 - A database to the literature on Vertebrate Paleontology from 1509-1958 and 1981 - 1993.


Biological Abstracts - A database that contains information on journal articles, conference papers, and other publications in the fields of biology, botany, and zoology, including paleontology.


Zoological Record - A database that contains information on journal and review articles, books, meeting proceedings, and reports in the Zoological Sciences, including paleontology.


Other Databases

Web of Science - Web of Science, which is part of the Web of Knowledge, is an index to journal articles in science and technology from 1955 to the Present. It can be used to identify who has cited an article. For information on searching Web of Knowledge, see the Web of Knowledge Search Guide or the Geosciences Librarian.


Dissertations & Theses Index - ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (formerly "Dissertation Abstracts International") is the most comprehensive source for information about U.S. doctoral dissertations. It also contains references to selected master's theses. The database includes citations to dissertations accepted in the United States from 1861 to the Present. Abstracts are available for all dissertations completed since 1980.

Early American Newspapers I, II & II - Searchable full-text archive of American newspapers, from 1690-1922. This database can be used to find descriptions of early geologic events (such as the New Madrid Earthquake) as reported in the news.


ProQuest Congressional - Provides full-text access to early geological publications that were published in Congressional documents.


American Periodical Series Online - Digital collection of over 1000 American journal and periodicals from 1740 - 1900. Includes some early American scientific journals.

Making of America - A digital collection of over 10,000 books and 50,000 journal articles from the 19th Century, including early geological reports on eastern U.S. states as well as materials on paleontology.

OAIster - Central search site for digital repositories.

Resources by Subject - Has databases and indexes related to Science, Health Sciences & Medicine available to IU students, faculty and staff.
