Programmer/Analyst, Digital Media Services

Job Summary: Performs software design, programming, database administration, and other tasks required for the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of Library Technologies (LT) software systems, primarily in support of digital media (audio and video) online services delivery. Serves as high-level technical support resource for software systems, including the Avalon Media System (and the legacy Video Streaming Service and the Variations Digital Music Library, which Avalon will eventually supersede), coordinating with librarians, local support providers, the UITS Support Center, Avalon and Variations partners and adopting institutions, and other front-end support providers as needed, as well as with other LT technical staff. Diagnoses problems reported by users; makes and tests software code changes to correct problems; and manages LT's production, test, and development servers in the UITS Intelligent Infrastructure related to digital media services delivery.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related technical discipline; 2 years of experience in systems analysis and programming of complex software systems, including work in Java, Java web application development, and web services technologies such as JavaScript, AJAX, or Ruby on Rails; 1 year of experience in XML and XML-related technologies, relational databases, Perl, and UNIX system administration; and experience providing technical support required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; good interpersonal skills; a positive customer service attitude; and ability to work as part of a team. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; willingness to learn new technologies; and ability to work with minimum supervision and with self-motivation.

Web Application Programmer/Analyst, Digital Library Applications

Job Summary: Performs software design, programming, database administration, and other tasks required for the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of Library Technologies (LT) software systems, primarily in support of web-based digital content delivery.

Serves as high-level technical support resource for software systems, coordinating with librarians, faculty, and staff as well as with other LT technical staff and UITS staff; diagnoses problems reported by users and makes and tests software code changes to correct problems; and supports the full software development life cycle, designing, coding, and debugging applications in various software languages.

Responsible for performance tuning, improvement, balancing, usability, and automation; and supports, maintains, and documents software functionality. Integrates software with existing systems; evaluates and identifies new technologies for implementation; and maintains standards compliance for development life cycle.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a computer science or related technical discipline, two years of experience in systems analysis and programming of complex software systems, including work in Java, two years of experience in Java or Ruby-on-Rails web application development and with web development technologies such as Javascript, AJAX, HTML5, and CSS, and one year of experience in XML and XML-related technologies required.

Experience with relational database technology; excellent oral and written communication skills; and good interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team.

User Experience Designer

Job Summary: Provides interaction design services to key technology-based projects by working with stakeholders across IU Bloomington Libraries’ departments to understand requirements in order to design web-based user interfaces, mobile user interfaces, and online visual elements. Performs usability testing and ensures accessibility of services.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a user experience discipline such as human-computer interaction design, interaction design, or related field and 2 years of experience in interface and visual design (as demonstrated by a portfolio) or a related professional position required.

An equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired will be considered.

Experience with interaction design, visual design, image formats and properties, web design, web fonts, mobile design; demonstrated experience with the relevant interaction and visual design tools (Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent); and demonstrated experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Knowledge of and experience with academic libraries or higher education work environments preferred.
