Included are interviews with several people who have undergone the procedures, which includes both physical alteration of the body and psychological counseling. In 1992, seventy homeless youth registered for a theater project in the Hollywood shelter where they lived. Over a period of seven months their stories were shaped into monologues, scenes and songs. Of the original seventy, ten completed the project and became performers. In 1993, they performed their play "Friendly fire" at the Los Angeles Festival and toured high schools throughout the city.
