Class Reserve Services (Media & Reserve Services)

"Reserves" refer to any print, media, and electronic resources that instructors request to be set aside for student use throughout the duration of a course.

Books and Media Items

Open Reserve – Books owned by the IU Bloomington Libraries may be placed on open reserve.  The open reserve books are shelved by Library of Congress call number in Media and Reserve Services Stacks.  Open reserve books may be used in the reading room, or may be checked out for 4 hours, 1 day, or 4 days as specified by the instructor and indicated on the book band.


Closed Reserve
– Both books and media items owned by the IU Bloomington Libraries may be placed on closed reserve.  Closed reserve materials are shelved behind the MRS Desk.  Students must present a student ID or photo ID in order to use an item on closed reserve.  Closed reserve materials may be used only in the library and for a 4 hour period of time.


Personal Copy Reserve
– Materials (books or media items) owned by instructors may be placed on Personal Copy Reserve.  These materials are shelved behind the MRS Desk.  Instructors may specify circulation parameters.

 

Items borrowed from regional campuses, or via Interlibrary Loan cannot be placed on reserve.


Book Chapters, Journal Articles, and Electronic Resources

Electronic ReserveElectronic reserve provides access to reserve materials anytime and from any location.  Book chapters, journal articles, and links to electronic resources may be placed on electronic reserve.

Most libraries on the Bloomington campus will accommodate requests from faculty and instructors to place materials on reserve.  Below are links to the various libraries with specific reserve policies and procedures.

Reserve items are listed in IUCAT and may be located using Instructor Name, Course Number, or Course Name.  (From the IUCAT main page, select the "Class Reserves" link on the right hand side of the screen.)
