W231: Professional Writing Skills

Job Research Report

This report requires that you demonstrate your ability to find information about a position, career, or place of employment before you write a cover letter or resume.  Use the list of recommended resources on this page to find articles and information about your position and the company or organization to which you are applying.  Take a look at the useful links for free web resources that will also help you find information on your job as well as general tips on finding information.

Tips:

  • Think broadly about the position or company for which you are applying.  You may not be able to find information about small, local employers but you will probably be able to find information about similar companies and positions that you will be able to use for the report

  • Be flexible and do more than one search in one resource using different search terms.  There are usually several ways to describe a career, position, or company and your results will probably be better if you can come up with the best search terms
