Data Management

Getting Started with Data Management

Data management is a vital part of the research lifecycle. From the moment a project begins, careful attention to how your data is stored can mean the difference between success and failure for your research (or worse, if your data is lost or corrupted). Luckily, Indiana University provides researchers with support for data management and preservation, as well as help navigating the tricky world of grant funding regulations.

This guide is intended for researchers at IU Bloomington who wish to learn more about general best practices for managing their data, grant funder mandates, and Indiana University’s resources and support. Use the navigation menu to the left to explore topics related to Data Management.

Resources

  • NSF Data Management Plan Boilerplate
IU-specific language to help you write a data management plan that conforms to general NSF requirements.
  • University Research Policies
Your "one stop shop" for documented policies related to research at Indiana University. Part of a larger site that documents all university policies. A good starting point.
  • DMPTool
This interactive website offers guidance and resources for writing your own Data Management Plans to the specifications of a variety of grant funding agencies. Among its chief advantages is the availability of boilerplate language for researchers who plan to use the IU cyberinfrastructure to manage their data.
  • IU Bloomington Data Management Service
Detailed information on the data management services and cyberinfrastructure that Indiana University Bloomington offers affiliated researchers: Data Management Plan consultations and workshops, instructions on depositing your data with IUScholarWorks and the Scholarly Data Archive, on-campus support for data management needs.
  • University of Colorado-Denver: Managing Your Research Data: Great guide for those managing clinical/translational research data.
