I. Searching for books
In IUCAT (the IU Libraries' online catalog), use the Advanced Keyword search screen, and try these search terms (as subjects):prostitution placename history (eg, prostitution new york history)
prostitutes placename history
prostitution history 19th century
prostitution history to 1500
prostitution history sources (for primary source materials)
Follow links from IUCAT into Google Books Search and HathiTrust Digital Library for digitized versions of many out-of-copyright books. **Tip: this works the other way around too--if you are in Google, and find an interesting-looking book that is NOT available online, use the "find in a library" link to get back into IUCAT.
You can also search WorldCat, a giant super-catalog of most US libraries. Use the "request materials through ILL (Interlibrary loan)" option to get books, videos and other materials that are not available at IU.
II. Finding the existing research on your topic
Check these resources for other scholars' research (secondary sources) on your topic:
Historical Abstracts (includes America: History and Life) - searchable online index to scholarly journals in history. Use prostitution as a subject term; use the advanced search screen to limit your results by language, time period, etc.
JSTOR - online fulltext collection of the most important scholarly journals in many fields. Searches for very specific search terms (such as an organization or an individual's name) work best. Very good for book reviews.
OneSearch@IU - use to search for both books and journal articles at the same time --covers all fields
Gender Studies Database - searchable online index to journals and books on gender issues
GenderWatch - online fulltext collection of journal articles on gender issues
See the Library's Resources by Subject page for more suggestions, if your paper topic overlaps with another field of study, such as political science, religious studies, sociology or psychology.
III. Collections of Primary Sources
History of Women microfilm collection - a huge collection of books and pamphlets on women's history. Location: Wells Library Microforms HQ45. Some items in this collection have been digitized. Search the online guide to identify materials of interest (select "History of Women" as collection title before you search)
Defining Gender Online - digitized collection of British primary sources on gender issues, 1450-1910. Try a keyword search for prostitution (can limit by century)
Making of Modern Law: Primary Sources (1620-1926) and Making of the Modern World - digitized collections of primary sources relating primarily to law and economics
Victorian Women Writers Project - searchable, full text collection of fiction and non-fiction works by 19th-century British women (try keywords searches; also the subject terms you used in IUCAT)
Women and Social Movements - digitized collection of primary sources documenting women's involvement in social causes in the U.S., 1600-2000. To find materials on prostitution, do a general search for prostitution as a keyword OR look under Social Movements-->specific movements or groups (eg Boston Female Reform Society). Also available: Women and Social Movements International.
IV. Historical Newspapers, Magazines and Journals
Search these digitized indexes and collections for historical press and academic coverage of your topic. Use date limits to find contemporary accounts. Depending on what you're looking for, you'll need think about using the vocabulary of the time period as keywords--such as "fallen women" "magdalenes" and other euphemisms.
C19: The Nineteenth Century Index - searchable index to 19th-century British and American publications, including popular magazines, books, scientific publications, and British parliamentary papers.
ProQuest Historical Newspapers - a digitized collection of some of the major US newspapers, such as the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, etc, several important African American newspapers, and two English-language newspapers from India from the 19th and early 20th-century. Also available: the [London]Times Digital Archive. All have complete historical coverage, back to their first issues.
19th Century Historical United States Newspapers - digitized, searchable collection of historical US newspapers. Also available: Early American Newspapers Series I, II & III (covers different papers; includes 17th and 18th-century publications as well as 19th-century).
American Periodicals Series Online - digitized, searchable collection of popular magazines and journals, 1740-1900
19th Century British Library Newspapers - digitized newspapers from the UK
19th Century UK Periodicals and British Periodicals - two collections of digitized nineteenth-century British magazines and journals
Periodicals Index Online - online searchable index (with some full text) to scholarly and scientific journals in English and other western European languages, from their earliest issues (good coverage of the 19th century). Also available: JSTOR (all full text, but covers a smaller number of journals)
