David Bradley 16MM Film Collection

 Home > 16mm Film Collection

The collection spans the history of cinema in the United States and Europe, including both classic and obscure films from France, Germany, Italy, Russia, England, and Scandinavia, as well as the films of the world’s most acclaimed filmmakers.

Approximately five percent of the titles in the Bradley Film Collection exist only as 16mm prints, which makes this collection especially unique. These titles are not widely available and many exist only in archives. In order to preserve the film prints in our collection, we will use an NEA grant to transfer several of these titles to DVD for on-site access by scholars and students. The titles scheduled for transfer to a digital format cover the range of the collection, from early silent short films to David Bradley’s own home movies, which provide a glimpse of social life in the Los Angeles film community.

Accessing the collection
The Bradley film collection is an archival 16mm collection with limited access. See
David Bradley Film Collection Access Policy for restrictions.

 Searching the collection
All of the 3964 titles that were sent from California in 1998 have been cataloged in IUCAT. To search the collections visit Indiana University's Online Catalog at

For the most successful searching in IUCAT, use the "Advanced Keyword" search mode and paste: Bradley, David, 1920-1997, former owner in the "keywords anywhere" box along with your title, or other relevant query entry to ensure you bring back items from the Bradley collection specifically.
Additional material such as Bradley production original film elements and incomplete excerpts from films are listed in the Lilly Library's finding aid.

Missing Films
267 titles listed in Bradley's original inventory never made it to Indiana. Missing films include all titles by John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Fritz Lang and more.
