Guide to the Monumenta Germaniae Historica
The Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) is a large collection of medieval historical sources for the study of German-speaking Europe (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) from the fall of the Roman Empire to the year 1500. The collection consists of five series: Scriptores, Leges, Diplomata, Epistolae, and Antiquitates, along with the Wietere Reihen, an additional series for the critical study of the German Middle Ages.
Accessing the MGH
There are three ways to access the MGH at Indiana University Bloomington. Due to the size of the collection and different licensing agreements, the MGH is not available in its entirety through any one source; however, using a combination of these resources will allow the researcher to gain access to various parts of the collection. The series and subseries of the MGH are numbered; using the links for the print collection and the dMGH will take users directly to those resources; the eMGH must be searched separately using keywords contained within the document.
Print: IUCAT
Contains the most currently released sections of the MGH, but is missing several series and subseries.
Electronic: dMGH
Published by the Monumenta Germaniae Historica Institute. Provides full text and page image access and is fully searchable, but a moving wall excludes access to publications released in the last five years (parts of Scriptores, Leges, and Antiquitates). Search interface is in German.
Electronic: Monumenta Germaniae Historica (eMGH)
Published by Brepolis. Allows for simultaneous searching with other medieval text collections, such as the Library of Latin Texts. The eMGH is updated yearly and has an English-language interface, but is not full-text searchable and does not yet contain as many series and subseries as the dMGH.
