Web of Knowledge is useful for finding journal articles (primary sources) in all kinds of scientific and technological areas and includes a version of Medline that covers a wide variety of medical topics. The truncation (wild card) symbol is * in this database. Examples of possible search terms, sometimes called keywords, include:
human nutrition
food craving*
food pyramid*
pellagra
lactose intolerance
nutrition
dietetics
"human animal interaction*" [use quotes to focus search]
PubMed is produced by the National Library of Medicine and includes a version of Medline. Possible search terms include:
favism
lactose intolerance
In some cases, it might be convenient to limit PubMed searches to the Dietary Supplements subset (dietsuppl [sb]). For instance, one may type pellagra AND dietsuppl [sb] in the search box.
Encyclopedia of Life Sciences will not give you primary journal articles but can be useful for finding background information on your topic. Possible search terms include:
vitamin C deficiency
eating disorders
Medline Plus is good for background information and provides authoritative and up-to-date health information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. A good place to look for information on diseases and conditions, such as anorexia nervosa, or lactose intolerance.
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is a good place to find background information on your topic and help you choose keyword synonyms to use in searches of article databases such as Web of Knowledge and PubMed. Possible general searches may include:
genetically modified food
nutrition
