IU Chemistry Library Reference Guide for Undergraduates

This website contains information on good places to start your search. You may download a pdf handout here.

SCIFINDER and REAXYS are good sources for physical contants, spectral information, and thermodynamic data.

Physical Properties

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (also on reserve). In this authoritative resource you will find physical constants such as melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, vapor pressure, heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, index of refraction, etc.

Aldrich Catalog (also on reserve) contains information about the chemicals that this company supplies. You may find information about meling points, boiling points, density, vapor pressure, or refractive index.

The Merck Index (on reserve) has information about melting point, boiling point, specific rotation, solubility, or density.

Lange's Handbook of Chemistry (in reference)

Handbook of Data on Common Organic Compounds (on reserve) contains information about melting point, boiling point, vapor pressure, refractive index, solubility, and density of more than 5,000 organic substances.

Handbook of Inorganic Compounds (on reserve) has data on melting point, boiling point, density, and solubility of more than 3,000 inorganic compounds.

Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology (also in reference)

Spectral Information

Spectral Database for Organic Compounds, SDBS.

NIST WebBook

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectra (in reference).

Sadtler IR Absorption Spectra (in reference)

Aldrich catalog (1H and 13C NMR spectra, and IR spectra of some compounds)

The Aldrich Library of FT-IR Spectra (on reserve)

The Aldrich Library of 13C and 1H FT NMR Spectra (on reserve)

Thermodynamic Properties

NIST WebBook includes gas phase thermochemistry data, condensed phase thermochemistry data, phase change data, and reaction thermochemistry data.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Phyics (also on reserve). This authoritative resource includes interactive tables with standard thermodynamic properties of chemical substances, thermodynamic properties as a function of temperature, thermodynamic properties of aqueous ions, and heat of combustion.

Lange's Handbook of Chemistry (in reference)

Safety

CCINFOweb is a good resource for finding general safety information. It contains Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), as well as health and safety information on chemicals, including: health, fire and reactive hazards; and recommendations on safe work practices, handling and storage, accidental release, and first aid.

Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials (in reference)

Aldrich Catalog is a good resource for finding MSDS.
