I. Finding Primary Sources in English

Use IUCAT to search for translated primary sources. Books that are out of copyright may be available online: look for links from IUCAT to Google Books/HathiTrust.

Search strategies: use the Advanced Keyword search: limit by language, use sources as a subject term, plus your keywords
Use Starts With (Browse) search, browse by subject: [geographical region] history [look for your period] sources

Try IUCAT searches that work well in WorldCat, a super-catalog of most US and many major international libraries.

Internet History Sourcebooks Project is a useful collection of historical study materials, including primary sources in English. Note that the selections are of mixed quality: look for a print source to verify that the selection comes from a reliable source. You may be able to find additional readings from the same print sources (look for them in IUCAT.)

II. Finding Current Scholarly Research

General:
Historical Abstracts -  research on world history (but note that this primarily covers post-1500 period)

JSTOR - searchable full-text of historical runs of important scholarly journals in the humanities, arts, sciences, ecology, and business (but be aware that it is several years behind for most journals)

Academic Search (EBSCO) - multi-disciplinary resource for journal articles (note also includes articles from popular magazines; make sure you know the difference)

Anthropology Plus -  covers the fields of anthropology and archaeology (try especially for ancient cultures, especially those with minimal written history)

eHRAF Archaeology - full-text database of information on archaeological traditions (prehistoric cultures) around the world (another source for research on ancient cultures with little or no written history)

Specific areas/cultures (also see Resources by subject pages):
Africa-Wide NiPAD - research on African Studies

Bibliography of Asian Studies - Contains record of research and scholarly literature on Asia written in Western languages; includes books, journal articles, conference presentations, chapters in edited volumes, etc. You may also find this list of Asian Studies E-journals useful (note that you can search for keyword in a specific journal but not in the whole collection at once)

Bibliography of Native North Americans (EBSCO) - research pertaining to native North American culture, history, and life (mostly post -1500 but may have some pre-European contact information)

HLAS Online: Handbook of Latin American Studies - reviews of research on Latin American Studies

Index Islamicus - publications in European languages on all aspects of Islam and the Muslim world

Annee philologique (Database of Classical Bibliography) - research on classical Greece and Rome

International Medieval Bibliography - research on the European Middle Ages, including the Middle East and North Africa, in the period 400-1500

III. Finding Articles about Teaching
