Gazetteers

A gazetteer is like a dictionary for maps that keeps track of the names of places and physical features like rivers and mountains. You can use them to determine official names, correct spellings, and to find out what a place used to be called. Many gazetteers also contain information on the size of the feature or  statistics -- like population -- about the place.
